Then I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest who shall do according to what is in My heart and in My mind. I will build him a sure house, and he shall walk before My anointed forever. As Samuel grew and faithfully conveyed messages from God, it became obvious that God was working through him. They were recorded by their genealogy, in their villages. David and Samuel the seer had appointed them to their trusted office.

So Samuel did what the Lord said, and went to Bethlehem. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.

Now when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel had gathered together at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard of it, they were afraid of the Philistines. And he and Samuel went and stayed in Naioth. And Elisha returned to Gilgal, and there was a famine in the land.

The training of these religious leaders was to serve as a barrier against corruption and to protect the nation by furnishing it with men qualified to act as leaders and counselors in the fear of God. At times God had His prophets fulfill additional duties such as anointing future kings and working with them. Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite.

For I have provided Myself a king among his sons. When they had come down from the high place into the city, Samuel spoke with Saul on the top of the house. Then Samuel explained to the people the behavior of royalty, and wrote it in a book and laid it up before the Lord. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house. For a number of years David was close to Samuel, able to learn from his guidance and experience So David fled and escaped, and went to Samuel at Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him.

Much earlier, in the time of Moses, God established the office of judge. Moreover you shall select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

Who Was Samuel in the Bible?

Some familiar military judges included Joshua, Gideon, Deborah and Samson. Samuel fulfilled a more general sense of a judge, being a person carefully selected by God for his integrity and skill to decide legal cases for the people. A principle that is repeated time and again in the period of the judges can be found when Samuel explains to the people of Israel that they must put away their false idols and faithfully turn their hearts back to God.

The ancient Israelites generally forsook their one true Protector and Provider until they faced a crisis. There was a very great slaughter, and there fell of Israel thirty thousand foot soldiers. Only then would God secure their land and give them protection from their enemies.

Samuel: The Birth of a Prophet

Samuel gathered the people, and they fasted that day, repenting of their sins. Then Samuel prayed on behalf of all the people.

Then Samuel cried out to the Lord for Israel, and the Lord answered him. The institution of kingship comes not from divine revelation but from the request of the elders of Israel, and this request is treated by Samuel as rebellion against Yahweh. The king is chosen not by divine election but by lot, implying that no special qualities were required, and the bashful candidate has to be summoned from a hiding place.

Conflicting traditions about Samuel.

He followed him in his wanderings, and was continued in office through David's reign; but, for his part in the conspiracy of Adonijah, he was banished by Solomon to the priestly town of Anathoth, where he presumably died in disgrace. The ancient designation of the two books of Samuel does not indicate that he is the author in fact, his death is related in 1 Samuel 25 or the hero of the books; indeed, it is difficult to deduce what the title was intended to mean. This was the probable reason for Elkanah's double marriage. Prophets, The nebiim were well organized and were responsible to a specified watch Leviim nebiim, Chronicler which took the name of a father from the time of David. We learn from Ex. God says to him, "Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge, that I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth?

This story is related to the account of Samuel as judge in chapters 7 and 12, and he is clearly presented as the last of the judges; it is indicated that the system of the judges was rejected by the Israelites not because of its failure but because of their worldliness. This tradition has two questionable features: Samuel is the only judge who is a permanent magistrate as well as a military leader, and his conclusive victory over the Philistines in chapter 7 cannot be historical, since it is contradicted by the subsequent military exploits of Saul and David.

The story of the birth and vocation of Samuel at the beginning of 1 Samuel is regarded by critics as legendary because of a number of obviously unhistorical features. The story is also at the root of the priestly role imposed on Samuel at a later date in 1 Chronicles 6; but this is an effort to explain in terms of the later priesthood the sacred functions performed by Samuel.

There are also two different accounts of the rejection of Saul by Samuel. It is quite unlikely that either the powers of the king or the prerogatives of the priest were as closely defined as this in the early period. In the second story chapter 15 , Samuel is motivated by the failure of Saul to observe the ethic of the holy war.

In this role, Samuel is associated with the bands of musical ecstatic roaming prophets (Nevi'im – neb'im) at Gibeah. The Lord called Samuel at a young age to become a prophet (1 Sam. 3). After Eli's death, Samuel became the great prophet and judge of Israel and restored law.

This story does not exhibit the same improbability. It seems that there was a firm tradition of a split between the two men but an inexact memory of the details. Info Print Print.
